WiFi in Chile is regulated under literal j.1 of Resolution 1985 EXENTA (spread-spectrum equipment). It is not literal a: literal a covers traditional VHF/UHF portable transceivers, while the entire 802.11 family — 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz (WiFi 6E) — falls under j.1 and the dedicated 6 GHz band section.
WiFi 4 and WiFi 5 (802.11n / 802.11ac)
WiFi 4 (802.11n) operates on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with theoretical speeds up to 600 Mbps. WiFi 5 (802.11ac) operates exclusively on 5 GHz with speeds up to 3.5 Gbps. Both standards fall under literal j.1 of Resolution 1985 with a 1 W (30 dBm) EIRP limit. These are the most common standards in equipment currently on the Chilean market — the vast majority of routers, laptops, and smartphones sold today support at least WiFi 5.
WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E (802.11ax)
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) operates on the same 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with improvements in efficiency and multi-device capacity (OFDMA, enhanced MU-MIMO). WiFi 6E extends 802.11ax to the 6 GHz band (5925-7125 MHz) with additional restrictions in Chile: indoor-only use, integrated non-removable antennas, and no external antenna connectors. WiFi 6E routers with SMA/RP-SMA connectors on the 6 GHz band do NOT comply with the updated literal j.1 and must declare only the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands on their compliance page.
WiFi 7 (802.11be) — next generation
WiFi 7 (802.11be) introduces Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 320 MHz channels on 6 GHz, reaching theoretical speeds above 40 Gbps. In Chile, WiFi 7 is regulated under the same literal j.1 of Resolution 1985 and the same band restrictions as WiFi 6E: the 6 GHz band is indoor-only with integrated antennas. The first WiFi 7 routers and laptops are already reaching the Chilean market and require Resolution 737 compliance like any WiFi equipment.

Edge cases and common compliance mistakes
- WiFi 6E (6 GHz) in Chile is only authorized for indoor use with integrated antennas. Routers with removable external antennas or SMA/RP-SMA connectors on the 6 GHz band do not meet the updated literal j.1 and must declare only 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz on their compliance page.
- The UNII-1 band (5150-5250 MHz) is also indoor-only. Outdoor equipment operating in that band is non-compliant, even though other 5 GHz sub-ranges do allow outdoor use.
- Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) on UNII-2A and UNII-2C is the manufacturer's responsibility: if the device cannot detect weather and airport radars, it cannot declare those bands as supported.
